If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection (UTI), you know how uncomfortable and painful they can be. However, recent research has shown that cranberry products could be an effective way to prevent UTIs.
Although it had been previously seen as more of a myth, a new global study that looked at 50 recent trials, including almost 9,000 participants, found that cranberry juice and supplements can help prevent UTIs in women, children, and people susceptible to UTIs.
The findings demonstrated that with the use of cranberry, women’s risk of repeat UTIs was reduced by more than 25%. Children’s risk was reduced by more than 50%, and the risk in people susceptible to UTI following medical interventions was decreased by about 53%.
UTIs are a common health issue, especially in women who have a shorter urethra which makes it easy for bacteria to reach the bladder.
Cranberry products contain compounds called proanthocyanidins that can prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract. This can prevent bacteria from causing an infection and reduce the UTI risk.
However, it’s important to note that not all cranberry products are created equal. It’s best to look for products with high concentrations of proanthocyanidins, such as cranberry extract supplements. It’s also essential to consume cranberry products consistently rather than occasionally to see the preventive effects.
While cranberry products can help prevent UTIs, it’s not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a UTI, seeing a healthcare provider who can properly diagnose and treat it is important.
